Spent the day winding from pine forests to beautiful rolling hills and farm land while making our way northwest from the Clarno Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument where we stopped to grab Mae a stationary nap and take in the view of the spires. At each road junction, we found desolate little one street towns with names like Fossil, Antelope, and Shaniko, several with out of order or closed signs on the one gas station in town. With 23 miles to empty, we plugged in GPS coordinates for a gas station 22 miles away. If not for coasting the last 10 miles down the hill towards the Deschuttes River and the town of Maupin, we could have had a much longer day. #airstream #liveriveted #fillupeverychanceyougetineasternoregon

While the Painted Hills is just one of three "units" of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument - each unit having been uniquely eroded to reveal different periods of time ranging from 5 to 55 million years ago - the Sheep Rock unit also looks more like a watercolor than reality. Plus, it's home to the awesome paleontology center where Wynne earned her third Junior Ranger badge. This morning, we headed east toward the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Since Mae refused to take her second nap while we drove, we leveled the trailer in the parking lot of the Painted Cove Trailhead and set up camp while she slept in her crib. @advodna_ann and I may have also caught a little rest while Wynne watched "A Bug's Life" and we waited out a few showers. A short boardwalk winds through crackled clay left behind from when the area was a massive floodplain, each layer of color representing a different mineral content and time period. #airstream #liveriveted #airstreamwithkids #paintedhills #traveloregon

I have a confession to make. I've been unfaithful. I mean, it was just on the Internet, but I'm not gonna lie and say I haven't thought about doing it for real. I even told @advodna_ann about it, and as you might have guessed, she wasn't exactly happy. Why did I feel like I needed something new? Why couldn't I just be happy with what we had? Why would I do something that could jeopardize our relationship with new friends? Couldn't I just find another way to stimulate myself in the Airstream? I didn't have any good answers for her. Maybe it wasn't my best idea, but I even showed her some of the web sites I'd been drooling over late at night. To be honest, I couldn't really get her interested. And while I still don't really see the harm in looking once in a while, I've come to realize that converting a late 70's Crown SuperCoach school bus into a motorhome is something I'll just have to think about in private and that our Airstream fits us perfectly at the moment. I really do love the Airstream. Between you and me, I might bring the subject back up with Ann in a few years, maybe after she's had a glass of wine and who knows, maybe she'd be "into it." #trueconfessions #busconversion #skooliecrush #airstream #liveriveted #skullhollow

Made it out for a family hike today at Smith Rock. Easily one of my top ten favorite hikes. Just so beautiful and tons of nature even though there's a group climbing around every corner. We chose the harder hike, as we do, because it's not fun unless you're in pain wondering if you made the wrong decision. #totallyworthit #youllloveitwhenitsover #smithrock #hikingwithkids #fulltimefamilies

Monkey Face is a 350 ft spire, overhanging on all four sides, with some of the hardest climbs in the world on its faces. There are also a few "aid" routes, meaning climbers use either bolts or other types of anchors to make upward progress through the sections that are too hard to climb. Apparently, from one angle, it resembles a monkey face, but all I could think was #thatlookslikeadick. A 45 minute tow today, and we're all set up in the woods near Smith Rocks at the delightfully named Skull Hollow. We'll watch the climbers and check out the river for a couple days before heading east towards the Painted Hills. #airstream #liveriveted #airstreamwithkids #smithrocks #skullhollow
