We built 15-30 minutes of buffer time into each step of our morning today and used every last one. We woke up a bit late, didn't get into the car until late, had to stop on the road a couple extra times and, as we'd feared, our site at the campground south of Portland hadn't been vacated by the time we got there at 10:00 am. As I geared up for an escalation with the summer-job teen at the registration window, he yelled out to his buddy manning (well, boying) the exit gate for the latest checkout hang tags. "Looks like it's your lucky day," he smiled as he pulled out a tag with our now-vacant site number on it. We swung around the loop and into the spot, speed-unhitched, plugged in power and cranked the AC for the dog. In the next 10 minutes, we gathered beach stuff, made PB&J's and were back in the car on the way to Long Wharf just in time to make a specially-arranged ferry for a ride out to Cushing's Island to cash in on a last-minute invitation to a Lobster Bake celebrating the anniversary of two friends from Petaluma, one of whom, the aptly screen-named @lobstervine, specifically demanded she be mentioned in one of my mega-captions. The people, feast and location were incredible: one of Wynne's best friends from home (and her parents who we also like!), a whole Vinalhaven lobster each with all the trimmings and access to one of only 30 or so houses on an island with no cars other than two caretakers pickups and an old firetruck parked by the dock. So glad our trip (and this morning's) timing worked out! #lobstah #maine #cushingsisland #ontheroadagain
